Aged 70, he made the oil painting amidst a period of extraordinary creative energy, known to work into the small hours of the night well into his late seventies. The piece exemplifies the scrupulous honesty and psychological depth he brought to all his subjects, including himself. Harnessing his technique of “maximum observation”, Freud captures himself with remarkable vitality with his signature dappled skin-tones and meticulous approach to light.
