Lee Ufan is the multidisciplinary master that revolutionised East Asian art in the mid-20th century. His conceptually-rich but visually-restrained practice might look like the minimalism that arose concurrently in the west, but it has very different foundations. Lee studied painting in Seoul for only a few months in 1956 before moving to Japan to study philosophy instead. Lee Ufan (he/him) was born in 1936 in Kyongsang-namdo, South Korea and moved to Japan in 1956 for university. He now lives between Japan and Paris
Museum
As well as being housed in prestigious public collections around the world, Lee Ufan has two museums dedicated to his works. Lee Ufan Museum in Naoshima, Japan is designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando. Lee Ufan Arles is an exhibition space and cultural venue in the South of France.
