In From Line, the meditative brushstrokes of Lee Ufan’s iconic original are translated to a new limited edition silkscreen print of quiet, transportive power. The edition is made in collaboration with Dia Art Foundation, for which the launch fundraises.
South Korean artist Lee Ufan is a pioneer in the truest sense. After founding the influential Mono-ha movement in Japan, he played a key role in Dansaekhwa (Korean monochrome painting), which saw a stripped back approach to instead focus attention on the act of painting itself. His celebrated From Line series draws from calligraphy exercises he practised as a child – the meditative repetition of lines and dots requiring complete command of mind, body, brush and breath.
To create the edition, the printmakers at Make-Ready have faithfully captured the rhythms and gestures of the original with deep respect and consideration – right down to the stain of linseed oil on the canvas – echoing the artist’s own reverence for mark-making.
I’ve done many editions in the past, but have never seen any like these. What Make-Ready and Avant Arte have achieved is normally impossible in a print.
