William Mapan presents a new work created especially for Digital Art Season at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

This release is presented in two forms: a digital collection titled Confined, and a physical print titled (Un)confined, each created from the same generative system and sold separately.

The generative digital collection, Confined, begins the narrative within an enclosed space, where animated forms push against the limits of their environment.

(Un)confined then extends the story as the same forms appear to escape beyond the frame into an open landscape, presented as a signed limited edition print with silkscreen gloss varnish details.

Together, the works invert conventional expectations of each medium, with the digital composition embracing a more expressive visual language while the silkscreen print resolves into bold, graphic precision.

For each artwork sold, 14% of the price you pay, excluding any shipping and/or minting costs, will be donated to the V&A.

William Mapan2 collaborationsFor over a decade, William Mapan worked long hours as a creative developer in the tech industry. In his spare time, he made art, but always just for fun. Then one day in 2018 he received a DM on Twitter. “Can you mint this?” It said. Mint? Mapan was baffled. He didn’t know what ‘mint’ meant. But slowly, the NFT world began to draw him in. And in 2021, he released his first NFT. Unsurprisingly, it was an instant success. Mapan’s abstract digital paintings are truly one of a kind. The subtle combinations of colour and texture are beautifully expressive and emotional. Even though the artworks are generated by code, they look like they've been painted or drawn with materials like charcoal and graphite.
