With the strength of ancient marble, Moe Nakamura tackles invisible anxieties.

Firmly grounded, the peaceful figure clutches their centre, finding a warming cluster of gold. Originally created as a wood carving, Inside Us meticulously translates the original woodwork into marble. The natural veins of the Carrara marble are revealed, creating unique textures across the soft facial features of each character. With a pointed hat topped with gold, the enchanting figure is a beacon of empathy, in which the artist is hopeful we can find aspects of ourselves.

“As invisible anxiety and a sense of confinement continue to linger in the air, I created this piece with the hope to empathise with the unerasable loneliness that each person carries. I believe that if we look inside ourselves through the gaping hole, there may be hope.”

Moe Nakamura1 collaborationMoe Nakamura believes in hope. “From the moment we are born, the only way to establish ourselves is by believing in a world that has already been created by others." Optimistically, she believes in the world but she’s also critical of how it could be better. Nakamura is inspired by Japanese folklore, nature and kawaii figures – soft and plastic toys similar to anime characters which are often brightly coloured with exaggerated expressions. In part, they remind her of her childhood and play. These nods to contemporary culture, along with Nakamura’s use of social media, contrast with her use of traditional Japanese carving. This is a tension at the heart of her work. The old and the new endlessly collide.
