Grant Levy-Lucero venerates a Mexican icon with an edition of hand-painted vases.

The brand logos that emblazon Levy Lucero’s ceramics are a nod to modern consumer culture. Much like the ceramics painted with myths and gods by Levy-Lucero's ancient predecessors, they embody the spirit of our time and place. The edition of 25 glazed ceramic sculptures re-imagines the logo of popular Mexican candy, de la Rosa – an ode to Guadalajara where the artist hand painted each vase.

Behind the scenes

Grant Levy-Lucero1 collaborationGrant Levy-Lucero sees ancient Greek and Roman pots as a blueprint. The textbook definition of art. His own ceramics take these as a starting point. They’re witty, and laden with American logos. Bounty, Cookie Crisp and Moon Pie all feature. To create them, the artist uses a traditional coiling technique. This is where you roll out long, snake-like shapes of clay, and then layer them on top of each other to make a vase. After, he adds imagery in bright gloss paint, drawing attention to the bumpy surfaces of the clay. Deliberately naive, the pots also nod to old cartoons from the Looney Tunes empire.

Reviews from Avant collectors

Absolutely gorgeous! I have admired Danielle McKinney's work and Shelter is exceptionally beautiful. The colors, the texture - I was delighted when I opened the box. The frame and floating presentation is also perfectly matched to the beauty of the piece. Also, well done on the shipping - it came thoroughly protected. Thank you!
