The composition was inspired by the concept of Ori – our universal path or destiny. I wanted to replace the traditional halo with a symbol of Ori, creating a cyclical feeling of our stories.

An ornate print by Harmonia Rosales celebrates the biblical figure of Eve as a symbol of the African diaspora.
Portrait of Eve embodies the artist’s signature approach of reclaiming classical art to centre the empowerment of Black women. In the portrait, Harmonia replaces the traditional halo with visual representations of Ori, the Yoruba concept of spiritual intuition and destiny. Each symbol represents a milestone in Eve's story – a baby signifies birth, a snake marks loss of innocence, a tree symbolises systematic oppression, a boat references the transatlantic slave trade, coins represent the sale of bodies, and finally, a skull signifies the death of both Eve and Ori. The artwork also features as the front cover to Harmonia’s first book, Chronicles of Ori.
This limited edition archival pigment print has been carefully crafted by our artisan printmakers at Make-Ready with shimmer details and a matte varnish to emulate the textures of the original work, painted in 2021 with oil and 24-carat gold leaf.
