What is an edition?
At Avant Arte, limited edition artworks are the centre of our world. We're aware that on the surface they can be, like many worthwhile things, a bit mysterious. Here's everything you need to know.
JR: Miniature Giants
Installations by JR are some of the most viewed artworks in the world. Ahead of our first collaboration, we visited the legendary photographer in Paris to talk about scale, scaffolding, the ever-growing ambition of his public projects and why he wants to stay naïve forever.

La Nascita, Milano Centrale, Italie, 2024
JR adorns Stazione Milano Centrale with a rugged facade linked to its past. With a surreal trompe l'oeil, La Nascita connects the architectural grandeur of the train station with its history. In 1906, the construction of the Milano Centrale was initiated after many tons of rock were excavated from the alps to build the Simplon Tunnel connecting Italy and Switzerland. JR’s dramatic portrayal of the hollowed mountain brings this history to life. By veiling the Roman, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco architecture of the station with his own image, the artist blurs time and place. Positioned at a site of arrival and departure, his intervention invites travellers to reflect on the human urge to explore the natural world, and construct their own.
JR archived the installation as a photograph shot across multiple moments in the day – available to all for 48 hours only as a signed, limited edition print.

Lemonhead
A child slides free from reality in Hiroya Kurata’s sun-kissed vignette. For his paintings, Hiroya Kurata draws inspiration from family life. Many are based on photographs he takes during adventures with his wife and three children. Tenderness is balanced with bizarre artistic interventions. In this case, the subject’s head becomes a large smiling lemon. Complete with deckled edges and a silkscreen varnish seal, aptly-titled Lemonhead translates a recent painting of the same name into an edition of 40 signed prints.
All Aboard (Hand-finished)
All Aboard is based on an original painting from the artist’s You Sea Us series. While creating the series Ludovic spent several months living and working in Spain so as to better understand the experiences of immigrants arriving to Europe from Africa.A small shell drawn at the base of each print references the natural object’s use as currency in Africa prior to colonial intervention - here painted black and red in deference to Black bodies lost at sea throughout history. This work is part of Inner Visions collection curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah.
