New and old collide in Christian Rex van Minnen’s absurdist, emotionally-charged portraits. Very Thick Avatar belongs to Avatars, a series of 10 original monotypes created specially for our debut collaboration.

Realised through a bespoke process dubbed ‘indirect painting in monotype’ by the artist, each work comprises a series of unique impressions from hand-painted plexiglass plates – evoking the layered technique of historic Venetian painting with an irreverent contemporary vocabulary.

“Monotype as a process occupies a strange territory – they are ultimately one of one. Only one can be made.”

Framing

Arrives float-mounted, using Japanese paper loops on acid free off-white mount board, in an American walnut wood frame fitted with UV anti-reflective plexiglass for protection.

Medium

Original hand-painted and hand-printed monotype on 250gsm Rives BFK paper.

Certificate of Authenticity

Arrives with a certificate of authenticity.

Christian Rex van Minnen wearing glasses and a bright orange sweatshirt

Christian Rex van Minnen4 collaborationsFor Christian Rex van Minnen, painting is an introspective process. His surreal canvases channel the raw chaos of thoughts and emotions into elegantly rendered images. Using oil painting techniques inspired by Renaissance and Dutch masters, van Minnen depicts his subjects with a decadent level of detail. His subjects themselves are, however, far from sublime: deformed faces, garish still lifes and disturbingly contorted bodies. Meanwhile, brightly coloured additions such as rainbows, hearts and gummy sweets reflect the influences of contemporary Surrealist-Pop Art. By playfully clashing with their surroundings, these details add a sense of absurdist humour to his artworks. The results are laced with irony – at once hyper-realistic and nonsensical, beautiful and ugly, historic and contemporary.

I was lucky enough to have been invited to see the creation of this piece of work back in June and met the fantastic Miwa so seeing this print now is just fantastic. The colours are every bit as vibrant as the original.
