Across a series of 10 hand-finished prints, Julian Schnabel uses energetic interjections to connect an idyllic vignette with the here and now.

The Swedish House takes its name and subject from a trio of recent paintings based, unusually for the artist, on a photograph. Specifically, a photograph of a small house in rural Sweden. Taken by his brother in law, the postcard-picturesque image appealed to Schnabel’s poetic disposition – “a cliché of the perfect place.”

In each print a white oil paint mark punctuates the scene below, while a hand-poured layer of resin lends a glass-like finish. The gestural marks, a recurring motif throughout Schnabel’s practice, connect the artworks with the present moment. “It says that something's not finished, that we're transients – and there's something that goes beyond the edge.”

Framing

Prints arrive float-mounted on a concealed aluminium support, designed to give the impression that the artwork floats freely when hung – as envisioned by the artist. For archival purposes, the mounting system can be fully removed by an experienced framer.

Medium

Archival pigment print with deckled edges on 350gsm Arches Cold Pressed Cotton Rag paper, uniquely hand-finished by the artist with white oil paint and a layer of poured, ‘liquid glass’ resin.

Individually signed, dated (right) and numbered (left) by the artist.

Julian Schnabel4 collaborationsJulian Schnabel’s far-reaching practice spans painting, sculpture and film. Use of material throughout is expansive and mutable. Wood, velvet, linoleum, army tarpaulins and animal hides all act as sculptural surfaces – layered with mediums such as wax, car bondo and resin. Similarly, recovered postcards, old x-rays and found images become grounds for new paintings. The artist’s Plate Paintings began in the 1970s and continue today. To create them he breaks plates. Reassembles them. Then paints over the top. They arrive as portraits and landscapes – sometimes abstract, often allegorical. Self Portraits of Others (2021) at New York’s Brant Foundation examined the theme of portraiture throughout history with 25 new Plate Paintings based on emblematic works by the likes of Caravaggio, Velasquez, Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo.
