Takahiro Komuro bridges mythology and modern pop culture with a holographic sculpture.

Kira embodies the allure of the winged sphinx originating from Greek folklore. Traditionally depicted crouching to the ground, Kira stands defiantly on all four legs, gazing ahead to seek her next prey. Her human head wears a pointed hairstyle reminiscent of cat ears, nodding to Japanese anime. Komuro borrows traits from many beasts, including a tiger, lion and eagle, paying homage to the rich tradition of mythological creatures, where strange monsters were often composed of a multitude of existing animals.

The sculpture's title derives from the Japanese term ‘Kirakira’, meaning ‘sparkling’. This is reflected in the polarised paint that envelopes the bronze sculpture, the mythical colour shifting under different perspectives and lighting.

Medium

Bronze sculpture finished with iridescent paint.

Takahiro Komuro2 collaborationsBrightly coloured gloss sculptures by Takahiro Komuro balance fantasy with horror. Dragons, children and chimeric creatures sport double heads, many limbs and elongated necks. They range in size from small vinyl toys to large, life-sized creations. As the artist describes, they are “cute but shocking,” inspiring “a sense of discomfort.” Komuro begins his process with a digital render. Then he translates them into sculptures made of materials including bronze, wood and fibreglass. The artist is part of a generation blurring the boundaries between fine art and design. Alongside the likes of Kaws and Michael Lau.
