Dove is fearful yet courageous.

Burdened with a thousand emotions, Tahnee Lonsdale’s celestial figure crouches down to seek guidance from the earth. She is the personification of hope and peace – giving her the name Dove.

For the original work, Tahnee added layers of phthalo green on an orange base building her palette through trial and error. The edition captures the varied shades of green. The striking contrast between the off-black and the mint green adds a sense of gravity to the kneeling Dove, pulling you into the depths of her feelings.

“‘I want Dove to communicate the feeling of a deep well. Endlessness. A sense that all your self is within that one figure.”

Behind the scenes

Tahnee Lonsdale 1 collaborationFor as long as she can remember, Tahnee Lonsdale has needed to paint. “I’ve always had to work to feel normal", she says. “It’s very therapeutic. It’s a bit like journaling". On canvas, she uses layered oil paints to create a haven of emotional divinity. Her portraits are totemic, genderlessness and intuitive. Limbs and bodies entwine and entangle – the embraces are warm but claustrophobic. In all of Lonsdale’s work, there’s a push and pull between heaven and earth. Go lightly (2022) is one painting that shows a group of figures that could easily be a gaggle of fallen angels. Their heads reach high into the sky, but their feet drag down, heavily.
