Nikki Maloof injects vibrating visual patterns into her charming yet macabre domestic scene, Oranges. The artist has a tongue in cheek approach to memento mori – a traditional motif in still life that symbolises mortality.

The original large scale artwork has been reprised as a multi layered print. Each unique edition is finished with hand collaged fish, gouache and coloured pencil to blend her collaging language with the print.

"I never go overboard on being precise. I think it's what makes my form of patterning feel like my own."

Framing

Prints can be ordered float-mounted in a black wooden frame, fitted with UV plexiglass for protection.

Medium

13-colour silkscreen on 320gsm Coventry Rag White paper, uniquely hand-finished by the artist with coloured pencil and collaged elements of gouache on paper.

Nikki Maloof1 collaborationNikki Maloof brings a whole new take to still life. Fish, food and crockery all have an intentional lack of perspective. By contrast, intensely patterned wallpapers and tablecloths create depth. Together these elements amass into quietly strange domestic scenes. “Equal parts joy and anxiety,” as the artist puts it. Her process is measured but emotion-driven, building images from her imagination. Occasionally she refers to photographs or IRL objects, but "something is lost" if the scenes are “too real,” she says. Initial ideas are developed via sketching and collage, then translated with oil onto canvas. The artist’s influences are vast. They range from modernist Edvard Munch to postwar American painter Lois Dodd, along with contemporary painters like Nicole Eisenman and Jennifer Packer.
