Kwesi Botchway

Lady with a Tampi

€3,500

Edition of 40110.5 (H) × 95.7 (W) cmShipping est. 2 weeks

Kwesi Botchway’s stylistic portrait Lady with a Tampi embodies the beauty of Black experience through Afro-Impressionism.

The sitter reclines confidently into her chair, luxuriating in a casual moment of relaxation. Rich purple is integral to Botchway’s palette – connoting royalty, seduction and glamour. Acrylic hand-finishing draws focus to areas where Botchway believes our emotions are best portrayed; the eyes and lips.

“My work compels the viewer to become physically and emotionally invested in the subject’s story.”

Behind the scenes

Kwesi Botchway sitting and smiling with his portraits behind him

Kwesi Botchway2 collaborationsKwesi Botchway’s portraits relish in colour. Flat, brightly coloured backdrops accentuate the dark skin of the figures – which the artist renders in deep, nearly-black shades of purple. Seeking to “elevate Blackness,” the artist sees purple as a symbol of luxury and power, equating his figures with royalty. Highlights are layered in cross-hatching brushstrokes to give the skin an ethereal glow, tying into the expressive painting style Botchway dubs “Afro-impressionism.” In contrast to his earlier realist work, this style draws inspiration from contemporary painters such as Amy Sherald and Kerry James Marshall who use many different hues to depict Black skin – embracing the many intricacies of melanin.
