Galaxia II translates the orthogonal language of pioneering Neo-Geo painter Peter Halley into an edition of intricate, low relief prints.

4 individual layers are printed using vibrant UV inks and finished with metallic foil details, including a narrow gold border conceived to echo the gilded surround of a medieval altar. Rectangular ‘cells’ connected by circuit board-esque ‘conduits’ nod to the rigid structures which underpin society – and life within it.

The innovative technique results from Halley’s close collaboration with world-leading printmaker Lamina Studios. “As an artist, I think of myself as a composer, and the printmaker as the conductor of the orchestra.”

Peter Halley2 collaborationsPeter Halley creates fluorescent, diagramatic paintings suffused with social commentary. His circuit board-like canvases connect regimented arrangements of rectangles with precise, perpendicular lines. Alluding to what he calls the “geometrisation of modern life,” Halley observes parallels between the structures of electronic networks, prison cells and city planning. Dazzling neon palettes echo those used in eye-catching advertisements, and are rendered using industrial paints such as Roll-a-Tex and Day-Glo. Seamless surfaces, achieved using rollers rather than brushes, intentionally erase any trace of human touch.
