a print of shadows strolling through a softly lit cityscape

Take a stroll through Brooklyn with Deborah Brown and her dog, Trout.

Our first collaboration with Brown, March Snowstorm, is based on a painting from her Haunted Houses series. The print depicts an innocuous building bathed in the soft light of an early spring morning. As the city was waking from lockdown, Brown became enamoured with the mundane mysteries presented by vacant homes in her New York-neighbourhood, and set out to capture their enticing absence in her work.

“There is a softer, more gentle quality in March, and I wanted to convey that feeling in my painting .”

Behind the scenes

Deborah Brown smiling resting her hand in her palm

Deborah Brown1 collaborationWhen the Covid-19 pandemic started in spring 2020, Deborah Brown was already in the midst of a new challenge: self-portraits. She had been asked by fellow artist Patty Horing to collaborate on the exhibition Sit Still: Self-Portraits in the Age of Distraction. Brown began her self-portraiture journey painting herself how she had painted others in the past – often with pets, nudity and bodies of water. As her practice evolved, the physical self has vanished completely. For Brown, still life is less about the object itself, but rather a form of psychoanalysis – capturing the tangible things that represent her soul.
