Antony Micallef’s new limited edition print captures the raw instinct of his painting process.

Self Portrait with Blue Slash was originally painted in front of a mirror. However, Antony does not see himself as the primary subject of the work. Instead, he uses his own likeness as a starting point to see where the light falls, building up thick layers of oil until the paint takes on a life of its own.

To honour the extreme texture of Antony's impasto painted surfaces, this edition was printed as a 57-layer archival pigment print with 3 layers of gloss varnish.

Behind the scenes

Watch founder Tom Murphy of Make–Ready reveal the process behind this remarkable dimensional print edition, created in collaboration with Antony Micallef.

Ultimately, you are looking for the point where the painting has all of its own agency and you no longer need to guide it through the process.

Antony Micallef4 collaborationsAntony Micallef isn’t constrained by the boundaries of sculpture and painting. Instead, he uses thick impasto –  the process of layering on paint so it stands out from a surface – to create his 3D pieces. He also pushes this process to the extremes – scraping, twisting and ‘excavating’ the paint. Further texture is added by recycling dried paint from his palette and studio walls. The resulting pieces are distorted, charged and raw. This application is in sharp contract with the flat backgrounds of many of his paintings. Each one uses glazing techniques synonymous with the Renaissance artists like Rembrandt, and can often take weeks to perfect.
